Their damage drops off pretty hard. You can get a bunch of Throwing Damage Up star inheritables and temper them on but it's a fair amount of work/luck. The bigger thing is that their anima generation stays pretty high, so you can build up anima to spam yokai abilities with Nekomata. Makibishi and blinding shell should be some of the first ninjitsu you get, they help out a lot and give you a feel for how a ninja needs to play.
